Wooden gates and fences are among the most visible features of any property. They frame entrances, define boundaries, and say something about the care and character of the home or estate behind them. Choosing well means looking past the surface. It means understanding what craftsmanship in woodworking involves, and why it remains, in a world of fast production and cheaper alternatives, genuinely worth seeking out.

The word craftsmanship is used so freely today that it risks losing its meaning. But in woodworking, and especially in the production of handcrafted wooden gates and fences, it refers to something precise: the union of deep material knowledge, practiced skill, and a willingness to do things. 

A craftsman reading a piece of hardwood or softwood is not just looking at timber. He is reading the grain direction, the moisture content, the way the wood has grown, anticipating how it will behave over time, how it will respond to the seasons. That knowledge shapes every cut, every joint, every treatment decision. It is what separates wooden products built to last a generation from those that begin to warp and split within a few winters.

Not all wooden structures face the same demands. A garden bench can be moved under cover in winter. An interior door lives in a stable, controlled environment. A driveway gate or field fence, by contrast, is permanently exposed to rain, frost, wind, UV light, and mechanical use, day after day, year after year. 

For equestrian properties in particular, the requirements are high. Equestrian fencing must be genuinely horse-safe: no protruding fixings, no weak joints, no boards liable to splinter under pressure. It needs to be strong enough to contain large, powerful animals while remaining visually appropriate for the landscape. Getting that balance right requires experience that cannot be improvised. 

For residential driveway gates, the standards are different but equally demanding. The gate must operate reliably through thousands of open-and-close cycles, withstand vehicle drafts and wind loading, and continue to look beautiful across years of weathering. The joinery holding it together, the species of wood used, the quality of hardware specified, every element of the craft affects the long-term outcome.

Quality in handcrafted wooden products is not always obvious at a glance, but it asks for closer inspection. Here is what distinguishes genuinely well-made work from the merely adequate. 

Wood selection: the right species for the right application

Quality begins with the right timber, properly dried and prepared. At De Sutter Naturally, three species stand above the rest for outdoor structural use: 

• Tropical hardwood: naturally resistant to rot, mould, and insects without chemical treatment. Expected lifespan of 25 to 30 years with virtually no maintenance. The benchmark choice for horse fencing and field gates on equestrian properties.

• Robinia (Pseudo Acacia): the hardest native European timber, durability class I to II, with a natural lifespan of 25 years and no chemical treatment required. 

Joinery and construction method

Precision joinery outlasts screw-and-bracket construction by many years. Look at the corners and the frame construction, accuracy here reflects accuracy throughout. The sloped top rail on a well-designed field gate, for example, reduces the gate's weight at the far end, preventing the sag and drop that is the most common failure point in cheaper designs. 

Hardware and fittings

Stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized ironmongery at a minimum of 5mm thickness resists corrosion across decades. Cheap hardware is one of the most common reasons a quality wooden product fails prematurely. Our field gates are fitted with RVS safety bolts that thread into each other, leaving no protruding points and making the gate equally safe on both sides. 

Surface treatment and finishing

The best wooden gates and fences are treated in a way that penetrates the wood rather than simply coating the surface, allowing the timber to breathe and resist moisture from within. 

Installation accuracy

A gate or fence is only as good as its installation. Posts must be set at the correct depth and alignment, gate weights accounted for, clearances checked.
