Ideal fence height per animal

  • Ideal height: 140 to 160 cm
  • Why: Horses are sensitive and powerful animals. A visible, sturdy top line prevents them from trying to jump or lean on the fence. For young or sporty horses, 170 cm is recommended.
  • Extra tip: Use smooth wooden boards. Avoid barbed wire – it can cause severe injuries.
  • Ideal height: 90 to 110 cm
  • Why: Sheep are not jumpers, but masters of escape. Pay special attention to the bottom: an open space is an invitation to crawl underneath.
  • Extra tip: Use a solid bottom or fine-mesh sheep wire.
  • Ideal height: At least 130 cm, preferably 140 cm
  • Why: Alpacas are curious, skittish, and fairly agile. When startled, they can jump over low fences.
  • Extra tip: Choose a smooth surface without sharp edges. Also consider sightlines: alpacas want to see each other.
  • Ideal height: 130 to 150 cm 
  • Why: Donkeys are strong, stubborn, and sometimes push against the fence. A solid wooden structure is essential. 
  • Extra tip: Keep spaces between rails small – donkeys may stick their heads through.
  • Ideal height: 120 to 150 cm
  • Why: Goats are acrobats. They jump, climb, and destroy if necessary. Goat fencing must therefore be not only high but also sturdy and closed.
  • Extra tip: Woven wire or wooden planks without climbing structures are ideal.
  • Ideal height: 80 to 120 cm
  • Why: Pigs are strong diggers, not jumpers. The base must be deep and sturdy, with a low wooden plank or mesh to prevent rooting.
  • Extra tip: Provide a buried foundation or wire underground.
  • Ideal height: 120 to 180 cm 
  • Why: Chickens can fly – especially light breeds. A tall fence or a net on top prevents escapes. 
  • Extra tip: Also protect against predators such as foxes with buried wire and overhead netting. 

Practical tips for safe animal fencing

  1. Choose durable material: Wood is stylish and sturdy, especially for horses and donkeys. For small livestock, wire mesh can suffice if properly installed.
  2. Avoid sharp or protruding elements: This prevents injuries.
  3. Inspect regularly: Animals are inventive. A broken wire or loose board is quickly exploited.
  4. Seek advice: Every pasture is different. Slope, soil type, wind, and sightlines can all play a role.
